The Institute of Biology in Sarajevo was founded on January 11, 1946, by the decision of the National Museum and the Office of the Presidency of the People's Government of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Establishment Decree No. 5962 of January 12, 1946). The decree was published on January 16, 1946 in the Official Gazette of Bosnia and Herzegovina (number 3, page 57). Two years after its establishment, on January 1, 1948, the Institute of Biology became an independent institution under the management and supervision of the Committee for Faculties, Colleges and Scientific Institutions.

In the same year, the first issue of the journal “Annual of the Institute of Biology” was published, which would be published for the next four decades and which would close down together with its publisher in 1992. All issues of the journal are now available in digitized form on the website of the Faculty of Science.

The Proceedings of the Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina (hereinafter the Proceedings) with international participation is a representative periodical scientific publication with a very long tradition of publication. The concept of this scientific publication is aimed at publishing papers in the field of the modern methodological theoretical and applied research in geography and related sciences, the results of which have their place in improvements in local, regional and social development. The Proceedings is conceived as a scientific publication in which, in addition to topics in physical, social and regional geography, papers in the field of tourism, environmental protection, regional and spatial planning and geography in education are published. So far, seven Proceedings have been published, five of which were published after the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the former state union (FNRY, SFRY), geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, organized in the Geographical Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina in cooperation with geographical societies of the former Yugoslav republics gave their full contribution to the development of modern geographical scientific knowledge and achievements through the Congress of Yugoslav Geographers. The result of such active scientific engagement is the organization of two congresses of Yugoslav geographers held in Bosnia and Herzegovina, more precisely in Sarajevo. Out of 12 congresses in the former SFRY, the Geographical Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina organized the 3rd Congress of Yugoslav Geographers in Sarajevo in 1953, and published the presented scientific papers in the Proceedings of the Geographical Society of the PR B&H (People’s Republic OF Bosnia and Herzegovina) in 1954. After that, the Geographical Society of SR B&H (Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina) was the organizer of the 9th Congress of Geographers of Yugoslavia in 1972. Scientific papers presented at this scientific conference were published in 1974 in the Proceedings of the 9th Congress of Geographers of Yugoslavia, published by the Geographical Society of SR B&H.

After gaining the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Geographical Society in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as the legal successor of the Geographical Society of SR B&H, in cooperation with the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Science in Sarajevo continued to organize congress activities and publish Proceedings of these scientific gatherings. The first Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina was held in Sarajevo in 2004. The collection of papers of the First Congress was published by the Geographical Society in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2005, in which 26 scientific papers by geographers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and European countries were presented.

Having in mind the general social and scientific significance of geography in the system of education and scientific activities, the Geographical Society in the FB&H continued its activities in terms of organizing congresses and publishing the Proceedings. This resulted in the organization of the 2nd Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was held in Neum in 2008. The Proceedings of the 2nd Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with 44 scientific papers by geographers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and European countries was published in 2009.

After four years (more precisely in 2012), the 3rd Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina was held in Tuzla. The increase in interest in participating in this scientific gathering has resulted in a large number of submitted works and exhibitors. The Proceedings of the 3rd Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina was published in 2014 ( 58 scientific papers by domestic and foreign authors with international review).

Continuing the organization of the Congress and publishing the Proceedings, the Geographical Society in B&H, in cooperation with the Department of Geography, University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Science, organized the 4th Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016 in Sarajevo. The Proceedings of the Fourth Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina was published in 2017. A total of 52 scientific papers have been published, all with international review.

With exceptional organizational efforts in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Geographical Society in the FB&H, together with the Department of Geography of the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Science, organized the 5th Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2020 (Sarajevo). The Proceedings of the 5th Congress of Geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina was published in 2021. A total of 27 scientific papers have been published, again all with the international review.
