Educational and scientific departments

The department is a teaching and scientific research unit in which teaching, scientific research, professional and expert work in the main scientific fields is organized and performed. Within the department there are teaching, scientific research and other sub-organizational units in which teaching, scientific research, expert and professional work takes place: chairs, cabinets, centers and laboratories.

The department is managed by the head of the department. The head of the department is appointed by the dean of the Faculty on the proposal of the department council and with the consent of the Faculty Council, after a secret ballot procedure has been carried out. A head of the department should be with permanent full-time employment at the Faculty.

The mandate period of the head of department is four years, with the possibility of another consecutive election. In case of absence of the head of the department, his/her function carried out his/her deputy.

The head of the department organize and lead regular meetings of the department council, proposes the agenda and manages the work. The head of the department is accountable to the council of the department and to the dean of the Faculty. The head of the department can be recalled before the end of the mandate. The provisions relating to the removal of the dean will apply to the removal of the head of department.

The following teaching-scientific departments operate within the Faculty:

  • Department of Biology,
  • Department of Physics,
  • Department of Geography,
  • Department of Chemistry,
  • Department of Mathematical and Computer Science

Competencies of the department

The responsibilities of the department in the implementation of teaching and scientific work are:

  1. organization and execution of teaching and scientific work defined by the curriculum in study programs and in the subjects for which the department is the parent, as well as the organization of scientific research work,
  2. organization and performance of practical classes,
  3. preparation of study programs and teaching subjects and their permanent improvement,
  4. monitoring the implementation of established teaching programs and teaching subjects,
  5. monitoring the work and success of students and proposing measures for their improvement,
  6. proposing scientific and professional development and advancement of academic staff
  7. proposing the publication of competitions for academic and scientific research positions, as well as the composition of election commissions,
  1. proposing the replacement and hiring of academic staff,
  2. proposing the engagement of scientific and professional persons for experimental and practical teaching, as well as for the realization of scientific research and professional work,
  3. harmonizing the program of scientific research with the needs of teaching and scientific disciplines represented within the department,
  4. encouraging and introducing students to scientific research and professional work,
  5. organizing scientific gatherings within the scope of the department's work, and ensuring the participation of academic staff at gatherings of this type in the country and abroad,
  6. solving ongoing organizational and professional issues within the department
  7. establishment of a register of study programs that are implemented independently or in cooperation with other departments of the faculty and that form part of the register of study programs established by the rector of the University of Sarajevo in accordance with the law.
