Welcome to the website of the Department of Geography

Dear visitors,

You are on the website of the Department of Geography, which is one of the five education and research departments of the Faculty of Science, University of Sarajevo. The Department of Geography is the oldest education and scientific research institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina (and one of the oldest in the region) in a very broad field of geographical studies. It was founded in 1948, as one of the education sub-departments of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Sarajevo, but since the foundation of the Faculty of Science at the same university (on 1st December 1960), it has become a separate education and scientific department of this faculty.

Throughout the former period, the Department of Geography has developed its activities in two directions: educational and scientific. In the field of education, students are trained to perform the duties of professors and teachers of geography in primary and secondary schools, as well as to work in educational institutions in the field of geographical profession and science. In the field of scientific research, generations of professors and associates of the Department of Geography have made immeasurable contribution in the fields of studying natural and social resources as well as related economic development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, spatial and urban planning, regional planning and development, demographic development, tourism, environmental protection, GIS, etc. The result of this long-term work is visible in three recent study courses, which were established at the Department of Geography within the first, second and third study cycles: Tourism and environmental protection, Regional and spatial planning and Geography in education. Horizontal and vertical passability is enabled for all study courses. Academic titles that are acquired at the end of a certain cycle of study are adequate to the prominent study courses, and you can read more about that in the diploma supplements.

Bachelors, Masters of Science and Doctors of Science of the Department of Geography are nowdays employed in numerous public institutions, ministries, as well as various business organizations and companies, within which they successfully perform tasks in the domain of the narrower and wider geographical profession.

We are pleased to invite you to apply for one of the prominent study programs and cycles, and thus become part of the family of geographical experts.
